DIY: Chalkboard Calendar

Not only do I love this, but we NEEDED this SO bad!!! We have a tiny printed calendar on the fridge, and it’s impossible to keep up with.  David and I each use our phone calendars, but that doesn’t do much to keep up with eachother’s schedules as a family… thus, a family chalkboard calendar!

We had a big wall in our kitchen that I knew would be a perfect spot for this!  Central and busy location, thus allowing both of us easy access to the information.

I created one big square for the calendar, and left a small section for Memos or Notes.

The white lines on the calendar are actually painted on, so I don’t have to re-do those at the start of each month.  I just erase the previous month’s calendars and start afresh with the dates and month.

I found these chalkboard pens at the craft store, and I love them!  Less messy than chalk, and easier to scribble with.  They also came in a variety of colors.  I opted for red and white for now, just to see if they worked.  But they had blue, black, and neon colors as well.

Here’s how I made it:

First, we measured and marked off the part of the wall we wanted to use.  The calendar can be any size you want.  We simply measured the wall, decided how wide we wanted the calendar and the memo part, and marked it off with tape.  From there, we used chalkboard paint for the background.  It took 3-4 coats (and they recommend 24 hours between each layer!)

Once the chalkboard was painted and dried, we re-taped the inside to make the calendar.  After leaving a little room at the top for the month, we simply made 7 equal rows across the top and five equal rows down.

With white paint (4-5 coats) we made the calendar outline.

Once dried and the tape removed, it did need some touching up, which I did by hand with a small paint brush.

And voila!  My very own chalkboard calendar!  I love it already!!

I can’t wait for David to leave very sweet notes on the Memo section at 4:00 a.m. before he leaves for work, like, “Have a great day sweetie!”  or “Love you!”  (hmmm………we will see if that ever happens!!! maybe he will read this blog and get the hint!)

Max’s 1st Birthday Party!

Being a dual citizen of West Virginia and Kentucky, Max is getting 2 first birthday parties this year!!

Together with the other birthday boys, Eli and Noah, the three had a great 1st birthday party at the Children’s Museum.

We were fortunate that the weather ended up being ok and everyone could make it to the party!   We felt so blessed celebrating with good friends we have made here in West Virginia!  All of these kids are such cuties!!

Max’s birthday outfit (loved it!) was from one of my favorite smocked etsy stores, Gumdrop Grove.

Here are some photos from the event! (Picknik is offering free photo editing from now until April 19th, so I got a little crazy and creative during Max’s naptime!)

Finding Mom Support

Last night I text an anonymous Mom/friend the following:

“Seriously, I just asked David to watch Max while I went pee.  Max cried the whole time so David carried him upstairs to the bathroom and asked me ‘How long does it take to pee?’  WTF? Can a momma please pee in peace???”

She text back the kind of day(s) she had as well, with her husband (also a resident) working so much lately.

We each complained once, and that was it.  But it’s amazing how much better you can feel just venting to another Mom for a moment–one that you know won’t judge you, and understands exactly where you’re coming from.

I love motherhood.  And one of the reasons that I do is because I have made it enjoyable by trying my best to have a positive attitude about even the hardest aspects of the job.  By far, one of the best things I’ve done for myself as a Mom is found Mom support groups—both formally and informally.

When we first moved to West Virginia, I didn’t know anyone!  David was working all the time and I was working from home (not a great way to meet people or stay busy.)  I knew from the beginning that I wanted to form a social group of people in WV to have fun with and rely on for the next 6 years we’d be spending here.

While I was pregnant, I joined MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers.)  I found information about it online and on Facebook.  Most cities have at least one MOPS group, usually sponsored at a local church (check here to see if there is one near you.)  These women were amazing.  From the first meeting I went to (by myself) I immediately made friends and enjoyed the company.

When I had Max, my MOPS group brought food, diapers, and presents.  They offered advice for me as a first time Mom.  They supported and encouraged me.

Now, Max and I still attend MOPS meetings every other Thursday morning, and I always look forward to the camaraderie the group brings.  There are also mom’s nights out and play dates during the week.  It is a wonderful way for Moms to meet other Moms in a supportive and fun environment.  I highly recommend it to all Moms, whether you are new to a city or not.

I also joined a pre-natal yoga class, and made great friends that way.  That was  different from MOPS in the fact that these women were only days or weeks apart from my due date, so we were all quite literally experiencing much of the same things at the same time.  These moms are still great friends, and their kids and Max are only days apart, and love getting together to play.

Less formally, my sorority sister started a facebook group for all of us moms!  A private group, we are able to ask eachother questions and advice, or share funny stories about parenting.  Even though we are all over the country at this point, it makes you feel like help is very close by and a friend is always near.

Of course I also rely on my sisters and my own mommy—I have found that they are usually the most brutally honest ones, whether I enjoy hearing that at the time or not.  And I appreciate the pediatric advice my sister gives, though we are good not to bother her with too many “first timer” questions! (Hence the book she gave me….read about that here.)

My friends that don’t have kids are also wonderful support.  They often provide a different and outside perspective that I wouldn’t otherwise hear.

Other couples with kids have been great as well for me and David.  Sometimes it’s nice for David to have another Dad to talk too about—I don’t know, football—while me and the other Mom blab about breastfeeding, day cares, and immunizations.

So, I encourage you—new mom or veteran mom–to find support through any way you feel necessary.  A facebook group, a book club, coffee with the moms on your block, or an official and formal Mom’s club.  There’s something very liberating about complaining—I mean, sharing— the joys of motherhood with others who are willing to listen and help!

Weaning: The addendum’s addendum

You just can’t make this crap up!

So after our first weaning attempt, and second weaning attempt, we have now changed courses again…..

A night or two after Max got sick from what we thought was the whole milk, what happens?  David comes home from work feeling awful.  He’s out for the day, and I’m feeling pretty miserable myself.

With the stomach bug going around, we realize it has probably hit our household.  Not knowing for sure if Max had the flu or a bad reaction to whole milk, we have no choice but to continue with the weaning experiment.

I purchased whole milk again today, and we will slowly try that again this week.  I waited until this week because guess who’s coming to town?!? Grandma Cathy and Papa Gary!! Soooooooo, if there happens to be an “incident” over night, or even during the day, this momma will have plenty of help!  One person to give Max a bath, one to wash the sheets and clothes, one to sanitize the crib, and one to get up at 4:30 a.m. to go to work (that one gets to be daddy!)

We’ll see how this goes! Wish us luck!!
